Choose your op-amp

Will they fit?

01 / The problem

Your system is better than it sounds.

You chose the DAC, the amplifier and the speakers carefully. Then the factory chose the op-amp for you — and it chose on price.

What is actually in there
A chip designed in the 1970s.
NE5532, JRC4558, TL072 — competent, cheap, and fitted by the thousand. Every signal in your system passes through one.
Why you have not fixed it
Audio is full of expensive claims.
You have heard the promises before, and paid for a few. Being sceptical about a small upgrade is the correct instinct.
What it costs you
The next upgrade is a new box.
Most people replace the whole amplifier to chase what a chip was holding back — ten times the money, and the old one goes in a cupboard.
Why we build these
We were in that position too.
A good system, one cheap component in the signal path, and no honest way to know what it was costing. So we measured it, built the alternative, and recorded it — hear it before you spend anything.
Five minutes from now
Experience the transformation to your sound that €100 and five minutes of your time will bring.
No soldering, no modifications, nothing you cannot undo. Thirty days to decide whether it stays.
02 / Hear it, read it

Hear the difference, then read what others heard.

On video · Passion for Sound

An independent reviewer, in his own room.

Passion for Sound bought the op-amps, fitted them himself and filmed the result — not our channel, not our recording, and nothing we had a hand in.

That is exactly why it is the first thing on this page.

In print · 6moons · Srajan Ebaen

“The delta of sonic profile shifting available from strategic opamp rolling was unexpectedly large.”

Srajan Ebaen fitted three versions in his Audiophonics NCx500 nCore amp, swapped between them on repeat, and wrote up exactly what each one did.

“Unlike the oscilloscope deniers, my rolling showed very obvious changes. Ordinary lead ears will do just fine.” He called it “a very cost-effective way to scale up a value-priced amplifier platform.”

Sound demo · our studio recording

Same track, same chain, only the chip changes.

Recorded in our studio: three op-amps rolled through the same device at the same level, so what you hear is the chip and nothing else. Judge it with your own ears before you spend anything.

Use headphones or in-ear monitors. Laptop speakers will flatten exactly the differences you are listening for.

03 / The idea

Everyone talks discrete. We paralleled the best chips instead.

Discrete op-amps are built from separate components, and good ones sound genuinely fantastic. That is not in dispute.

But there is another route to the same — or even better — performance: take the best modern integrated op-amps available and run several in parallel, on a circuit designed for it.

The listeners most surprised by this are the ones who already own discrete op-amps: paralleled integrated op-amps do not merely come close — they often sound better. That is the claim we would rather you tested than believed.

Machined anodised heatsink, gold-plated pins, Virtual HiFi board.

04 / Why it works

Five things change at once.

Running devices in parallel is not a trick — it changes the electrical conditions the signal sees.

01
More current
Available on demand, so dynamics stop being rationed.
02
Better control
A tighter grip on the signal, especially where the load gets difficult.
03
Lower noise
Paralleled devices average their noise down, and detail comes up with it.
04
Bigger sound
Stronger, more dynamic, more physical — not merely louder.
05
Space and presence
More bass control, a wider soundstage, a more natural feel.

05 / The range

Four op-amps. Four characters.

Green, blue and two reds. In almost every device you want V1, V2 or Hypersonic — choose by the sound you are after, not by the spec sheet.

Green · the king of balance
Supersonic V1
Full and dense, with deep, well-controlled bass. Organic midrange with real presence, detailed highs with a slight relaxation, wide soundstage.
2 op-amps paralleled · stereo / dual
True JFET input · 70 mA
THD 0.00005% @ 1 kHz · 20 V/µs
Work temperature 65 °C

Supersonic V1

Blue · Grzegorz’s bestseller
Supersonic V2
Very neutral, with stunning dynamics, openness and detail. Soundstage and holography second to none, fast tight bass, natural midrange.
2 op-amps paralleled · stereo / dual
Bipolar input · 70 mA
THD 0.000015% @ 1 kHz · 27 V/µs
Work temperature 65 °C

Supersonic V2

Red · best for full-bodied sound
Hypersonic
All the dynamics and openness of V2, plus a layer of dense, rich sound with more present bass and deeper midrange immersion. The most organic of the four.
4 op-amps paralleled · stereo / dual
Bipolar input · 170 mA
THD 0.000015% @ 1 kHz · 22 V/µs
Work temperature 70 °C

Hypersonic

Red · single-channel devices
Hypersonic Mono
Same board and same footprint as Supersonic V1 and V2 — just red, and single-channel. “Mono” refers to the internal circuitry, not to mono-block amplifiers.
2 op-amps paralleled · mono / single
Bipolar input · 70 mA
THD 0.000015% @ 1 kHz · 27 V/µs
Work temperature 65 °C

07 / Will they fit?

Almost certainly — with no modifications.

Most audio devices use voltage regulators rated between 500 mA and 1500 mA, which is already enough headroom.

Supersonic V1 or V2 in an amplifier — safely, with no power-supply changes.
Supersonic or Hypersonic Mono in most low-power DACs and preamps — the usual fit.
Hypersonic in an amplifier on a typical regulator. Four is the absolute maximum.

5 min  to fit — lift the old chip out, press the new one in, matching the orientation notch. No soldering, no tools.

Important — Hypersonic
Four per device, and give them air.
Hypersonic draws 0.17 A. Do not use more than four in one device, and do not use them in a sealed enclosure — more than four, or poor ventilation, risks overheating the host device.
Running temperature

More chips means more heat. We measured it.

Every paralleled op-amp runs warmer than the single chip it replaces — that is physics, not a fault. The machined anodised heatsink is there to carry it away, and these are the numbers under load.

Thermal camera view (°C), same device and same load. Supersonic left, Hypersonic right.

Supersonic V1 · V2 · Hypersonic Mono  65 °C

Hypersonic  70 °C

Supply voltage, every model  ±5 – ±18 V

Warm to the touch is normal and within specification. What matters is airflow: leave the case vents clear, and if your device runs hot already, choose Supersonic over Hypersonic.

“I did not expect this much from something this small.” Verified reviews from people who fitted them in their own devices.

★★★★★

Out of curiosity I bought the Supersonic V1 and V2 for the Fosi ZD3 and ZA3 and compared them to Sparkos. I’m shocked — Supersonic was better. This combo easily won against the Audiolab 7000A and Marantz M1.

★★★★★

I replaced the standard op-amp in my ZeroZone mono amplifiers and the difference was immediately audible — clarity and micro detail, then the airiness and focus increased enormously. Bass is very clean and deep, in layers I had not heard before.

With the xDuoo XD05 Pro the Hypersonic reaches the same definition as the SS2590 but with greater richness, density and light. The richest, most defined sound I have obtained from it so far.

11 / In the box

Delivered in a printed twisted box.

Threaded lock-top, ESD foam insert, holographic label. Made here, not bought in — and every op-amp ships with a precision DIP-8 extender.

“Those should subsequently find use for vitamins, daily meds, spices or powders. They’re too nice to discard.”

Srajan Ebaen · 6moons

Each box is labelled with its model, so a drawer of op-amps stays a drawer of op-amps rather than a bag of anonymous chips. The insert is anti-static ESD foam, so the pins arrive protected.

Included with every op-amp

A precision DIP-8 extender.

A gold-plated riser that lifts the op-amp clear of the socket. It buys you height and position: clearance over tall capacitors, room in a tight case, and a little distance from whatever runs hot underneath.

12 / How this goes

Three steps, and you cannot get it wrong.

No soldering, no modifications, and nothing you cannot undo in a minute.

01

Tell us your device.

One message on WhatsApp. We will tell you which op-amp fits, how many, and whether it is worth doing at all in your case.

02

Fit it in five minutes.

Open the case, lift the old chip out, press ours in with the notch the same way round. The extender is in the box if you need height.

03

Listen for thirty days.

Play the records you know best. If your system does not sound better, send it back inside 30 days and we refund you.

The old chip goes back in just as easily. That is the whole risk.
